Football injury report: Clement, Caputo banged up for Badgers

first_imgSaturday night’s game against No. 3 Alabama was supposed to be Corey Clement’s grand entrance.Instead, the junior running back spent the majority of the game on the sidelines, hampered by a left groin injury he suffered in practice the week of the Alabama game, University of Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst said.Clement carried the ball only eight times for 16 yards. Backups Taiwan Deal (six carries for 14 yards) and Dare Ogunbowale (three carries for nine yards) rounded out Wisconsin’s meager rushing attack.Chryst said he was being cautious with his premier offensive player.“I think he could have gone a little bit more, possibly,” he said.Chryst also said the injury is a short-term issue that should be resolved in the near future during his news conference Monday.Clement didn’t practice Tuesday, but he said he had every intention of playing this Saturday against Miami (Ohio).“I’m planning to play [Saturday], and I think that’s the mindset you want to have,” Clement said. “You don’t want to say, ‘I’m not going to play this week because I’m scared to get re-injured.’ If you have to lay it out there for your teammates, you gotta do what you gotta do.”Fifth-year senior Michael Caputo suffered a concussion on the first drive of the game when Alabama running back Derrick Henry’s knee collided forcefully with his helmet.Caputo tried staying in the game, but was so disoriented he thought the Alabama huddle was his own team’s huddle. That’s when the UW training staff rushed onto the field and removed him from the game.Chryst said Caputo is going through the concussion protocol and his status regarding Saturday’s game is uncertain. D’Cota Dixon, who filled in for Caputo against Alabama, is expected to do the same against Miami (Ohio).Chryst said Leon Jacobs, who had trouble moving around as the game went on, told him he’d practice this week. True freshman linebacker Chris Orr filled in for Jacobs during some plays last Saturday.Offensive lineman Ray Ball, who is dealing with a bad arm, will be evaluated throughout the week, Chryst said.Chryst added he sympathizes with injured players because he knows how badly they want to be on the field.“These guys only have so many opportunities and they want to be able to take advantage of them,” Chryst said. “That’s what was hard for me to see more than anything.”last_img read more
