The election for probate judge of Tuscaloosa County is growing closer and candidates came together to discuss their aspirations and goals.Republican candidate Rob Robertson and Democratic candidate Laura K. Gregory squared off in a forum sponsored by Tuscaloosa’s Rotary Club on Sept 25. One of these candidates will take over the position from incumbent Hardy McCollum, who has held the office since 1976.Laura K. Gregory is a local attorney who has practiced in the Tuscaloosa County Probate Court for over 25 years. She said that she wants to grow the county to a place people want to permanently invest their futures into.“My vision for Tuscaloosa County is a place that people don’t only want to move to but where people want to stay and grow up,” said Gregory. “That’s critical to our futures that we keep folks here and that we develop what we have in the way of resources.”Robertson currently serves as director of the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency. He said that it is important to recognize the importance of the position, as it carries the responsibility of chairman of the Tuscaloosa County Commission.“What makes this role unique as I alluded to earlier is we are also electing a probate judge but also the chairman of our county commission,” said Rob Robertson. “So, there is a lot of matters on each side of that responsibility that we’re talking about.”The election will take place on Nov. 6.
