Three little unwanted pups who were left close to death are to be retrained as assistance dogs. The trio were handed into the Donegal Animals in Need charity in need if vital need of lifesaving care. The three dogs, which are Labrador/German Shepherd-cross sisters, were suffering from a range of problems. They were given veterinary care but it was feared that they would not make it.A spokesperson for Donegal Animals in Need said “Nine week old Charlotte (was Lulu), Coco and Chantelle, three Labrador/German Shepherd-cross sisters, were riddled with roundworms and two of them became very sick, ending up in the vets on drips, fighting for their lives.“They had such a heavy burden of parasites that as the worms came away, so did part of their intestines, leaving lesions in the intestine which in turn became infected.“Charlotte and Chantelle were in a critical condition but thanks to the outstanding care of the veterinary staff they are both now on the mend, although at times it seemed they wouldn’t make it.” The three pups are now eating special food and will join their sister Coco back at their foster home where they can recuperate. And the DAIN spokesperson added that the dogs are to play a very special part in peoples’ lives in the months and years to come.“We have brilliant news for their future – all three girls have been booked to be trained as Assistance Dogs – their breed mix being ideal for the job.“But for now they will be taking it easy while they recover as their fosterer gives a huge sigh of relief.”Unwanted pups which almost died to be retrained as ‘Assistance Dogs’ was last modified: March 11th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:animals in needassistance dogsdogsdonegalRESCUEDretrained
Corning >> The Corning Lady Cardinals weren’t supposed to dominate Friday night when the hosted a tough Sutter Huskies team, but nobody told the Cards, who took a 63-49 win. After Sutter scored first, the Cards went on a run and went up 11-4 just more than halfway through the first thanks to a pair of threes from Mariah Castle, who would have a big night. Another three from Morgan Mason inside the closing minute gave Corning a 16-9 advantage after one. While much of the strategy early on was to …
South Africa’s top two women tennis players met in the first round of the US Open on Wednesday, but the match carried very different significance for SA number one Chani Scheepers and number two Chanel Simmonds. After her 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Russia’s Nina Bratchikova, Simmonds faced Taylor Townsend. “I played what was probably the biggest ‘grind’ match of my life,” she reckoned of her 6-2 2-6 7-5 win. Simmonds said her experiences at the US Open had been positive and she was thrilled with her performances, especially in the qualifying rounds. For Scheepers, it was an opportunity to get back on track after a season undermined by injury in which she has slipped to 85th in the world rankings. For Simmonds, ranked 165th in the world, it was about enjoying her first qualification for a Grand Slam event. ‘A crunch match’Afterwards, Scheepers said she was pleased to have come away with the win. “It was a big opening match. When I saw we had drawn each other I knew it was going to be a crunch match,” she said. SAinfo reporter 29 August 2013 The 29-year-old Scheepers and the 21-year-old Simmonds had never previously met, but the result ultimately went with the world rankings, with Scheepers emerging a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 winner after an hour and 39 minutes. “Chanel is a great striker of the ball and has a great future ahead of her.” ‘I felt confident’“Going into my second round qualifier, I felt confident, and even though my opponent was carrying an injury, I was pleased with the way I played and won the match.” On winning her opening match against Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic, she said: “I played a very good match in the opening round of qualifying, a tight match where I won important points. ‘I played so well’Reflecting on her clash with Scheepers, Simmonds said she had started well and found it hard to believe that she had won the opening set 6-2 in less than 30 minutes. “I played so well in that opening set. The two very long games in the second set which I lost changed the momentum and gave Chani the confidence to split sets and run away as the winner.” “Playing an American in New York is never easy as you have to play the player and the crowd. I had to fight back from 1-4 down in the decider against Taylor to win and qualify, so that felt real good.” Scheepers will face former world number one and sixth-seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the second round. Good newsScheepers said Simmonds’ qualification for the US Open was also good news for South African tennis. “For far too long I have been the lone South African woman carrying the rainbow flag in the singles at the majors. I’m happy that Chanel has made this breakthrough, and I think it is great that Chanel and I could represent our country, not only in the major, but at the same time. I hope to see her in more majors.” “Chanel is playing some great ball and got to the final of the Soweto Open on the hard courts, which she likes, so for me, it was a good win, especially coming back from a shaky and nervous start.
South African paddlers excelled at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Copenhagen on the weekend, with Hank McGregor and Andy Birkett both claiming titles. After being disqualified at the World Championships in Rome in 2012, the victory was surely extra sweet for McGregor. In the battle for the men’s K2 crown, Shaun Rubenstein and Shaun Rice just missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth, while Andy Birkett, after a day’s rest, and his partner Cam Schoeman came home in fifth place. The only real disappointment for South Africa came in the women’s K2 race when the powerful team of Bridgitte Hartley and Michele Eray was forced out of the event within 500 metres of the start by a technical problem. Third world titleDurban powerhouse Hank McGregor captured the prestigious open K1 title on the final day of competition to become world champion for the third time. They were not alone in standing out, however, with two silver medals also being won, while in the Masters World Championships, which preceded the elite competition, South Africa came away with five gold medals, five silvers and one bronze. He made his break on the final portage, opening up a small gap on Spain’s Ivan Alonso and Frenchman Cyrille Carre, to win by five seconds over Alonso in 2:10:34. Lee McGregor teamed with Alan Hold for a K2 gold medal in the 60 to 64 age category. Hold had won a silver medal in K1 competition, while McGregor claimed fourth place against competition 10 years his junior while contesting the K1 race in the 50 to 54 age group. South African one-twoAndy Birkett, the three-time winner of the world’s largest canoe race, Dusi Canoe Marathon, meanwhile showed that his talents are not suited to the uniquely challenging Dusi only. He and Brandon van der Walt battled it out for the honours in the under-23 K1 category, with Birkett eventually edging out his South African compatriot for the title by a single second. “I can also hold my own in a pure paddling race. And I am actually very chuffed to be involved with marathon paddling and to be having so much fun with it. It took me a while to get into it and I’m glad I got into it, and I’m enjoying it.” His training partner and two-time under-23 world champion Grant van der Walt was seventh in his first shot at the senior title. Double winnersIn the Masters World Championships, Natal Canoe Club’s Marion Young and Len Jenkins senior both came away with two gold medals. The powerful Hungarian had too much in the tank for Flanagan, though, and went on to win by 31 seconds. 23 September 2013 Silver medallistsSilver medal winners included Nicholas Oldert (K1, 55 to 59), Radoslaw Olsewski (C1, 50 to 54), Lis Hart and Sandra Eardley, and Hilder Lapere (with ex-South African Margie Bohm, K2, 50 to 54). Young, competing in her first World Championships, won K1 gold in the 35 to 39 year age group and then teamed up with Angela Scruby to capture the K2 title. Jenkins, who had coached Young, won the men’s 70 to 74 age group K1 title and was second in the K2s. “I’m very happy to show people that I’m not just a Dusi athlete,” he told SAinfo from Copenhagen on the weekend. Silver medalKirsten Flanagan, the under-18 world surfski champion, added a silver for South Africa in the K1 women’s junior race after she and Tamara Takacs had broken away from the rest of the field to set up a two-boat battle for the win. Brandon Collyer and Rob Hart added a bronze medal in the 45 to 49 age group for the K2 race.
16 March 2015The Castle Lager Proteas achieved their most emphatic victory in ICC World Cup history when they beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets with all of 32 overs to spare in their quarter-final match at The Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday. It was the Proteas’ first victory in a knock-out World Cup match and the shortest knock- out match in the history of the World Cup.The Proteas now play the winners of Saturday’s quarter-final between New Zealand and the West Indies in next Tuesday’s semi-final in Auckland. In terms of the impact this result will have the only comparable match played by the Proteas at a World Cup is their first ever World Cup match against Australia at the same venue on February 26, 1992, when they routed their hosts, who included the likes of Dean Jones, Allan Border and Steve Waugh, by an identical 9 wickets. What will have pleased the Proteas the most will have been the return to his sublime best of Quinton de Kock (78 not out off 57 balls, 12 fours) as well as the fact they won after losing the toss and having to chase what was admittedly a small target. There was also the fact that the Proteas were at their very best in all three disciplines of batting, bowling and fielding.Dale Steyn, Kyle Abbott (who replaced the injured Vernon Philander) and Morne Morkel made the early breakthrough up front and then the two spinners took over, taking 7 wickets between them for 55 runs in 17.2 overs.Imran Tahir was named Man of the Match (4/26), while JP Duminy’s 3/29 included South Africa’s first-ever World Cup hat trick, the World Cup’s second-ever hat trick, and the second South African hat trick after Charl Langeveldt against the West Indies in 2005.It was also Duminy’s career-best, taking him past the milestone of 50 international wickets.Hashim Amla and De Kock then reduced the target of 134 to a routine affair with an opening stand of 40 before De Kock finished the job by timing the ball peerlessly into the gaps and mixing it with moments of untamed aggression. It was a sad end to the World Cup careers of two Sri Lankan and world legends – Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. The Castle Lager Proteas face Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground at 5.30am on Wednesday. (Many states already force some retailers to collect sales taxes, though their rules don’t apply equally to all online merchants.) It would also create a streamlined way for those companies to collect sales tax across 9,600 state and local jurisdictions.Companies like eBay and anti-tax activists like Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform complain that the bill is just too complicated, although both have other reasons for opposing the measure — chief among them being the way it would formally end the Internet’s (admittedly somewhat frayed) status as a tax haven. The bill’s detractors claim it will create massive confusion. The bill exempts online retailers who earn less than $1 million in annual out-of-state sales, although retailers like eBay are pushing to raise that cap to $10 million. EBay also complains that the bill’s collection mechanism — which would require states to provide companies with software to help them calculate taxes in various jurisdictions — will significantly injure its many retailers and, by extension, eBay itself.Amazon, by contrast, has thrown its support behind the bill. Since it already collects sales tax in many of the states where it maintains warehouses, the e-commerce giant would benefit if its competitors had to do likewise. The measure would also reduce any competitive disadvantage Amazon might face as it builds out its distribution network in pursuit of same-day delivery to major urban centers. The bill now moves to the Republican-dominated House for an inevitable battle. But as the New York Times‘ Jonathan Weisman notes, “…the bill would now go to the House Judiciary Committee, not the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. That itself could ease the bill’s passage.”Is an Internet sales tax an idea whose time has come, or just more government overreach? Take our poll above, and let us know your thoughts in comments. For three decades my friend was a successful salesperson. He was gregarious, charismatic, and charming. His method was to develop a personal relationship with his clients that was very much a friendship. He would invest his time and his money in that friendship. If his clients wanted tickets to the game, he’d buy them tickets. If his clients needed some present for their children, he’d acquire it for them. He spent money on lunches, dinners, golf outings, and other things that deepened his friendship. When we had lunch, he said to me, “My sales are terrible. I don’t understand. I am doing what I have always done, but it isn’t working.”The reason that my friend’s approach quit working is because he did nothing to create economic value. His friendship and his willingness to spend money buying things to please his clients is no longer enough to win their business or their loyalty. The world changed, but my friend did not recognize those changes and, worse still, he did not change with it. He did not shift his focus to the areas where he can create value for his clients.Your client relationships are still built on your being known, liked, and trusted. But the fundamental questions have changed.Known: It isn’t enough to be known. It’s what you are known for. What are you known for? Are you known for your ability to deliver some result? Are you known for solving some problem? Are you known for your business acumen and your situational knowledge? Are you known for creating value?Liked: It isn’t easy to buy your client’s business anymore. You still need to be liked. But being liked means something different. It doesn’t hurt to be gregarious, charismatic, and charming. But your client is trying to make a decision as to what it’s going to be like to work with you long-term. The decision they are making is what it’s going to be like to have you on their team. Are you like having a great new team member? Are you going to be easy to work with? Is the rest of their team going to want to work with you?Trusted: Great relationships, business or personal, are built on the foundation of trust. My friend’s willingness to spend money now subtracts from trust. It looks and feels unethical. It isn’t unethical for my friend to spend his own money, but it often can be for the person who accepts his gifts. The trust that you need is built on your ability to keep your word and your ability to delivering the outcome your client needs. How do you enable your clients to trust you? What do they need to trust you to do?It is still known, liked, and trusted. But what these words mean has changed. You have to change, too.
