Chelsea move six points clear

first_imgSUNDERLAND, England (AP):Chelsea moved six points clear at the top of the English Premier League by beating last-place Sunderland 1-0 yesterday, with Cesc Fabregas’ first-half goal earning the team its 10th straight win.The Spain midfielder picked up the ball 35 metres out, exchanged passes with Brazilian Willian, and stroked home a low finish into the corner from the edge of the area in the 40th minute.Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois preserved the lead with two excellent saves in the final minutes as the London club continued their impressive season.Chelsea are one victory away from matching the club record 11 straight wins achieved in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. They achieved their latest victory without the influential Eden Hazard, who missed the game for Chelsea because of a knock he sustained in the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.Sunderland stayed a point adrift at the bottom after 16 games. In other English Premier League games played yesterday, Manchester United continued their positive run with a 2-1 away win at Crystal Palace with big names Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic getting on the scoresheet.Manchester City and Tottenham and Liverpool all took advantage of Arsenal’s slip-up with wins over Watford, Hull and Middlesbrough.last_img read more
