From November 7, 1996 at Rupp Arena on the campus of the University of Kentucky, Phish has released a new show in their archival series on LivePhish. The performance came less than a month after the release of Billy Breathes, and features several tracks from that studio release, including “Character Zero,” “Waste,” and “Free.”Among other highlights are an extended, jammed out 27-minute version of “Bathtub Gin,” Pink Floyd’s “Bike,” played by request and stumbled through by Jon Fishman, as well as a climactic “Frankenstein” encore. Opened in 1976 with a capacity of 23,500 and named for former UK Coach Adolph Rupp, the venue was dubbed “the largest sporting arena in the country.” Phish rolled into Cats country just three shows after their Halloween Remain in Light show and midway into a 35-date national tour. The band’s sixth studio album, Billy Breathes, was released October 16th. Fall tour started that same day and was heating up on the heels of multiple guest drums and percussion appearances by The Fringe/Surrender to the Air’s Bob Gullotti and Santana’s Karl Perazzo. The band built upon that energy with driving beats, heavy keys and Trey’s percussion setup to propel the music into a new groove-driven amalgam, foreshadowing what was eventually called cow funk. A Live One had been out for more than a year, but multitrack tapes were still spinning to capture the magic at Rupp Arena – where more than 10,000 UK students and Phishheads got far beyond their $20 worth of vast jams, deep exploration and rarities.Rupp Arena set I highlights included a Chalk Dust Torture opener, the only Weigh of fall tour and a hot Stash. Waste and the tour’s first Guyute came next, followed by a Free > Tela combination that featured the Billy Breathes hit single paired with fall’s only Tela. An incendiary Character Zero closed the set. The Rupp’s set II kicked off with a Suzy Greenberg opener that set up the experimental, top-shelf (longest-ever at the time) Bathtub Gin. The Rupp Gin was a masterpiece that showcased a multiverse of creativity capped with a warped OUTro that melted right into Hold Your Head Up. After Bathtub Gin > HYHU, Fish emerged from behind his kit with his Electrolux vacuum for the only Bike of fall tour. A monumental You Enjoy Myself ended set II and alluded to the Frankenstein encore which put the exclamation point on one of the great sets of fall ‘96.11/7/96 was recorded by Paul Languedoc to digital multitrack and mixed and mastered by Jon Altschiller. Last weekend, jam favorites descended on the Spirit of Suwannee Park in Live Oak, FL for the one and only AURA Music Festival. One of the highlights of the fest was certainly the performance from Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, who absolutely rocked the festival last Saturday, March 5th.One highlight of their set was a killer performance of the song “F.U.,” featured on their 2014 release Psychology. With a new album due out on April 1st, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong continue to impress with their funky rock jams. Saturday night in NYC was one for the books with the double header of Soulive and Galactic bringing the funk to Terminal 5. The packed house was buzzing with excitement, ready for a double dose of funk provided by some of the best in the biz. The addition of the legendary Cyril Neville to Galactic’s set made for a particularly special show, highlighted by memorable covers of The Meters, Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, the Pointer Sisters and more.Soulive opened strong with their classic “Hat Trick”, during which guitarist Eric Krasno channeled his inner Jerry Garcia vibe for a short measure. Drummer Alan Evans then took to the mic to introduce everyone before delving into a new tune, “Common”. The band weaved seamlessly through “Common” into an older classic “Shaheed” before crushing on another new one called “BB Gun”. The trio slipped the new songs in without throwing the crowd off with the newness, but the diehards who knew, knew. It was perfect placement and flawless.New Orleans staple Galactic was next on the docket and ready to bring the funk hard. The band got the crowd into the NOLA spirit from the start, entering the stage to Carnival tunes resemblant of a Mardi Gras morning. They kicked things off in high spirits with a track off their latest album, “Sugar Doosie”. Frequent guest singer Erica Falls joined on shortly after, leading the band through newer track “Right On” into a funky cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Hard Times”. A powerful rendition of their “Dolla Diva” kept things grooving before delving into Rebirth Brass Band’s “AP Tureaud”. The energy in the room exploded as Cyril Neville took the stage, introduced as “the greatest soul singer alive” and ready to prove himself worthy of that title. The New Orleans legend came out grooving to a cover of The Meters’ “Gossip”, for which Neville provided vocals on the original. Continuing with the theme of keeping it in the family, he then busted out “Tell Me What’s On Your Mind”, a Neville Brothers throwback.Neville briefly departed from the stage as Soulive/Lettuce guitarist Eric Krasno joined on for the very funky “Cineramascope” off Galactic’s Ya-Ka-May. A soulful guitar solo quickly escalated into a rocking jam, prompting a massive dance party from the audience. Falls returned to the stage to aid on one of the band’s most well-known, feel-good tracks, “Hey Na Na”. As the band has cycled through several guest singers over the years, this song has been tested out by its fair share of vocalists from across a wide spectrum, including David Shaw of The Revivalists and Maggie Koerner on the studio version. While each of these contributors adds a little something different – Shaw more of an edge perhaps, and Koerner a softer feminine touch – Falls’ dominating stage presence and booming voice on this song really knocked it out of the park. In this moment it was clear that she has gotten into her groove with the band and established herself as a key member.Falls continued to shine with the highlight of the show, a powerful rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” that had everyone singing and dancing along. She then left the stage as the band was joined by saxophonist Ben Ellman’s cousin, Lucas Ellman of Chicago-based band The Heard, leading the funk army through a grooving rendition of Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band’s “65 Bars And A Taste Of Soul”. Neville rejoined the group for a heavy Meters double header, segueing into a cover of “No More Okey Doke” and following it up with “You’ve Got To Change (You’ve Got To Reform)”, all the while maintaining the good spirits and high energy in the room. Neville left the stage to make way for Falls to close out the show with a crushing version of the Pointer Sisters’ “Going Down Slowly”, her electrifying vocals filling over the room for one last time before the encore.After a short break, the quintet returned to the stage one last time to play an older original, “Funky Bird”. Finally, Falls and Neville both came out to bring things to a close with The Meters’ “Africa”. In 2005, Matisyahu found himself on a Bonnaroo stage with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. While Matisyahu had been known for his spiritualized take on the roots-reggae genre, the vocalist impressed with a barrage of beatboxing and lyrical gymnastics to accompany Anastasio’s improvisational style. Though mainstream success saw Matisyahu emphasize lyrical spirituality over musical exploration, the singer’s new approach is sure to please fans of the jam style.Matisyahu’s current touring band is comprised of some of the best musicians in the business. The band features guitarist and longtime staple of the downtown New York improv scene Aaron Dugan, Dub Trio bassist and long-time Matisyahu collaborator Stu Brooks, percussionist and Cyro Baptista, go-to-drummer Tim Keiper, and virtuoso keyboardist BigYuki. As a musical unit, what they produce is greater than the sum of its parts. Of course, it’s Matisyahu’s ability to improvise vocally that makes these performances so unique.As Matisyahu explains, “When I started out I was relatively mixing two black and white things. I was a very specific brand of Chabad, Hasidic orthodox judaism, even though I came to it from a mixture of things, I became very defined as that: I decided to define myself that way. My very first record, a roots reggae record, was very black and white: a Hasidic man making roots reggae music, and over the course of the last 10-15 years, I became more interested in texture and the gray area.”Last week, Matisyahu launched a college campus tour with Nadim Azzam, promoting a message of peace and unity throughout the country. Backed by this new group of musicians, Matisyahu has shared with us a montage capturing the infectious improvisation that his band is bringing to fans on a nightly basis. I take time between songs, sometimes up to 30 seconds or even a minute of silence to decide what the next song should be. This Friday marks the 45th anniversary of one of the most controversial and criticized crime-reduction policies in our nation’s history. On June 17, 1971 Richard Nixon’s administration published a special message from the President to the Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control declaring drug abuse as “public enemy number one” in the U.S. The message included language about devoting more federal resources to this cause, in the hopes of “prevention of new addicts, and the rehabilitation of those who are addicted.” While that goal seemed to be born of the noble intentions, the resulting policy, widely known as the “War on Drugs,” has played out less as a strategy to protect people from the perils of substance abuse and more as a witch hunt, vilifying any connection to drugs and lumping minor offenders in with serious criminals. In addition to costing the U.S. roughly $51 billion annually to maintain, the War on Drugs leans heavily on the cooperation of confidential informants. Law enforcement recruits these informants by leveraging their own (often minor) drug offenses to compel them to cooperate. While acting as an informant is often portrayed to minor drug offenders as a path toward retribution and reduction of punishments, the glaring reality remains that these practices frequently thrust largely defenseless, unaware young offenders into dangerous circumstances. “Today’s drug war involves a countless number of confidential informants – many of which are young people who are busted for a small amount of drugs and then coerced into making much higher-level deals, putting them in very dangerous situations” says Derek Rosenfeld of the Drug Policy Alliance. The DPA, the leading organization in the U.S. working on alternatives to the Drug War, has spent years fighting for more sensible drug abuse prevention policies. As the DPA’s Tony Newman explains, “There are so many sick aspects of the failed drug war, but law enforcement forcing people with a drug arrest to choose between a draconian prison sentence or becoming an informant is one of the most nauseating.”Beginning with an “Action Day” pre-party today and running through Sunday, The Purple Hatter’s Ball at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL this weekend aims to call attention to one such case—the tragic story of Rachel Morningstar Hoffman. After being arrested for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, Hoffman, a 23-year-old FSU graduate, was compelled to participate in a large-scale buy-bust operation involving 1,500 ecstasy pills, 2 ounces of cocaine, a handgun, and $13,000 cash. The deal went south, and Hoffman was murdered in the process. Umphrey’s McGee has announced that they will once again welcome the Shady Horns, aka Eric “Benny” Bloom on trumpet and Ryan Zoidis on saxophone, at an upcoming performance. The Lettuce horns players will link up with Umphrey’s McGee on August 12th, at the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion. Brownout Plays Brown Sabbath will be on as support as well.The Shady Horns are no stranger to Umphrey’s McGee, having collaborated with them a handful of times in recent memory. The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Wheels Of Soul tour is off and running, stopping last night at the renowned Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY for a full night of musical celebration. Initially conceived last summer, Wheels of Soul pairs TTB with some of the best groups around. This summer, the band brought along The North Mississippi Allstars and Los Lobos for the run, and brought out members from each supporting group to enhance their own performance.No stranger to collaborations, the Tedeschi Trucks Band has hosted some all-stars in their day. Last night, the band brought out a ton of guests, including Cesar Rosa, David Hidalgo and Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, as well as Luther Dickinson of NMA. After accidentally leaking their lineup last week, Wanee Festival has formally revealed their initial roster of 2017 performing artists. As previously reported, Wanee will see headlining sets from Bob Weir (2 days), Widespread Panic, Trey Anastasio Band, Gov’t Mule and Dark Star Orchestra (2 sets).
