What to Expect From Google IO 2017

first_img Tom Brant What to Expect From Google I/O 2017 Add to Queue Google CEO Sundar Pichai once downplayed his company’s efforts to make its own smartphones. But then he announced the Pixel last fall — a “phone by Google” — which quickly vaulted to the top of many a “best Android phones” roundup, including PCMag’s.In fact, the Pixel was just one of several new hardware offerings Google launched last year. You can now buy Google-branded products to automate your home, fix your spotty Wi-Fi, beam your browser window to the nearest TV and even escape to a virtual world. And since consumer electronics are relentlessly killed off and reincarnated, many of the devices Google announced last year will likely be updated onstage at this year’s Google I/O developers conference, set to begin on Wednesday near the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif.Like any Silicon Valley giant, Google — often via its Alphabet parent company — also has its hands in a dizzying array of projects beyond hardware and the internet tools on which it originally staked its claim to fame. So Pichai and his fellow Googlers could reveal more about the company’s initiatives in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and more at this year’s conference. Here’s what to expect.Android OGoogle released the developer preview of the next version of its Android OS in late March, codenamed Android O. It has spent the two intervening months in a feedback phase, still rough around the edges (here’s what we know so far). That could change on Wednesday, when we’ll likely get more details about the new operating system’s headline features. Some of what we expect to hear about Android O is related to artificial intelligence and virtual and augmented reality. The preview doesn’t have much in the way of support for VR or AR, but since Google makes its own Daydream View VR headset, that will likely change in the finished version. As for AI, Android O will likely have deeper integration with the Google Assistant, the company’s answer to Siri and Amazon Alexa. At only a year old, the Google Assistant is relatively young as personal voice assistants go, which means there’s lots of room for standalone growth and integrations with Android. To get the Assistant into the hands of as many consumers as possible, Google will likely make it easier for OEMs to implement it on Android O. It currently works with phones running Marshmallow or Nougat, but only if they use Google Play and have 1.5GB of memory and 720p or higher screen resolution. We also expect to hear about some back-end improvements to Android: Google has already promised improvements to get new versions of the OS onto existing devices faster, which should help solve the chronic rollout delays that are one of Android’s chief weaknesses compared to Apple’s fast-updating iOS. Watch for Google to boost Android’s security features, too, and maybe even announce a moniker (“Oreo,” perhaps?) that follows Google’s convention of naming OS versions after confectionary treats.Pixel and DaydreamA new OS version deserves new hardware, so Google is reportedly planning to update the Pixel and the Pixel XL, as well as roll out an entirely new phone. Details on the Pixel updates are scarce, but Android Police reports they’ll stick to roughly the same screen sizes. A third handset, codenamed “Taimen,” is also in the works, according to Droid Life, and it could have a display that’s even larger than Pixel XL’s 5.5-inch screen. As for virtual reality, I/O probably won’t bring major updates to Google’s Daydream View VR headset, which just went on sale last November. But it could offer more details on Google’s plans for a new standalone VR or AR headset, the likes of which are already in development or production at Oculus, Qualcomm and other companies. Google has been working on such a device for more than a year, according to a Wall Street Journal report in February 2016.Google Home and the Google AssistantSince Google is a relative latecomer to voice assistants, it has been churning out incremental updates over the past year, from selling Google Home in more countries to adding skills to the Google Assistant, including the ability to have it start your Benz and read you recipes in the kitchen. There are now more than 200 of these skills, but that still pales in comparison to the thousands available for Amazon’s Alexa.Google will likely use I/O to announce a major update beyond additional skills, like new developer tools for building the assistant into more devices. We could even see a new Google-branded speaker or other device, such as a speaker-and-router combo, especially since Amazon now has a handful of devices powered by Alexa, like the new Echo Show and Echo Look.I/O will also feature demos of further Assistant integration with cars, including a standalone version of Android Auto that doesn’t require you to plug in your phone to access Assistant and other features, according to Bloomberg.Android TV and Android WearThis one’s a gimme: we know there will be some updates to the versions of Android that power home entertainment devices, thanks to an I/O session that will cover “new APIs, features and upcoming platform enhancements” for Android TV.There’s a similar session for developers to learn about features in the next version of Android Wear. The current version, Android Wear 2.0, hit the first smartwatches and fitness trackers in February.Allo and other softwareGoogle’s Allo chat app has languished somewhat since its unveiling last year, due in part to security concerns as well as the dominance of Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and other more established competitors. If Google intends to revive it, I/O would be a good opportunity for some new feature announcements, but the company could just as easily abandon Allo, especially as it focuses on its other communication apps like Duo and Hangouts. On the operating system front, Google has a few tricks up its sleeve that we could learn more about, including plans to integrate the Chrome and Android operating systems so that Android apps can run on PCs. There’s also the Fuscia OS, still in the very early planning stages — so early, in fact, that it’s unclear what sort of devices Google intends it to power. The futureGoogle’s parent Alphabet is working on a ton of technology that won’t show up for download on the web or on the shelves of your local Best Buy any time soon. From self-driving cars to algorithms that can beat the world’s best Go players, there are a ton of geeky and futuristic endeavors that could show up in the spotlight this week. PCMag will be in Mountain View this week to bring you the latest from I/O, and you can also live stream Wednesday’s keynote address. US Eases Restrictions on Imports From Private Cuban Entrepreneurs

Register Now » This story originally appeared on Reuters Cuba Add to Queue Image credit: REUTERS | Stringer Reuters The United States on Friday dramatically eased restrictions on imports of goods and services from private Cuban entrepreneurs as part of Washington’s rapprochement with Havana after more than half a century of enmity. The U.S. State Department said the import of all goods and services was now permissible except in certain broad categories, which include arms, live animals, tobacco, vehicles, mineral products, machinery, and some textiles and base metals.”The administration had made it very clear they are changing the thrust of U.S. policy to allow the private sector in Cuba to blossom,” said Pedro Freyre, chair of law firm Akerman LLP’s international practice. “Of course there are two ends to this. We are still waiting to see how it is going to play out in Cuba.”Under Cuban law, private sector entrepreneurs cannot independently import and export products or services without a government license. However, artists are allowed to sell their work to foreigners, and there is also an exotic bird cooperative that obtained a license in 2013.The goods that can now be imported exclude those specified in the following sections of the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule:Section I: Live Animals; Animal Products (all chapters);Section II: Vegetable Products (all chapters)Section III: Animal or Vegetable Fats and Oils and their Cleavage Products; Prepared Edible Fats; Animal or Vegetable Waxes (all chapters)Section IV: Prepared Foodstuffs; Beverages, Spirits, and Vinegar; Tobacco and Manufactured Tobacco Substitutes (all chapters)Section V: Mineral Products (all chapters)Section VI: Products of the Chemical or Allied Industries (chapters 28-32; 35-36, 38)Section XI: Textile and Textile Articles (chapters 51-52)Section XV: Base Metals and Articles of Base Metal (chapters 72-81)Section XVI: Machinery and Mechanical Appliances; Electrical Equipment; Parts Thereof; Sound Recorders and Reproducers, Television Image and Sound Recorders and Reproducers, and Parts and Accessories of Such Articles (all chapters)Section XVII: Vehicles, Aircraft, Vessels, and Associated Transportation Equipment (all chapters)Section XIX: Arms and Ammunition; Parts and Accessories Thereof (all chapters).(Reporting David Adams, Marc Frank, Arshad Mohammed and Lesley Wroughton; Editing by Sandra Maler)center_img –shares February 13, 2015 2 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Next Article U.S. Eases Restrictions on Imports From Private Cuban Entrepreneurslast_img read more

Volkswagen Agrees to 153 Billion Settlement in Diesel Pollution Case

first_imgVolkswagen German automaker Volkswagen AG has agreed to pay more than $15.3 billion in a settlement with U.S. regulators over pollution caused by its diesel vehicles, according to a source briefed on the matter. The settlement stems from VW’s admission in September that it intentionally misled regulators by installing secret software that allowed U.S. vehicles to emit up to 40 times legally allowable pollution. It covers 475,000 2.0-liter vehicles. The Justice Department filed a proposed consent decree that confirms VW will set aside $10.033 billion to cover buybacks and fixes, $2 billion to invest in green energy funds and $2.7 billion to offset diesel emissions.Shares of VW were up 4.6 percent at 111 euros.A source briefed on the matter said VW would announce a separate settlement with at least 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico that will cost at least $600 million. The actual amount VW will spend on buybacks could be significantly less if regulators approve fixes and owners opt to get vehicles repaired. Most owners will get at least $5,100 in compensation in addition to the pre-scandal value of the cars and up to $10,000, documents filed on Tuesday said.Volkswagen expects to begin buying back vehicles in October, when a U.S. judge is expected to give final approval to the settlement and is to start proposing fixes in November. Some vehicles will require significant mechanical fixes.VW cannot resell or export the vehicles bought back unless the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approves a fix, the documents said. Volkswagen must repair or buy back 85 percent of the 475,000 vehicles by June 2019 or face penalties of $100 million for every percentage point it falls below that figure. The settlement does not cover fees for the lawyers of owners suing VW or address 80,000 larger polluting 3.0 liter Porsche, Audi and VW diesel cars. Also to be decided later is the amount of any civil fine VW faces under the U.S. Clean Air Act for emissions violations.(Reporting by David Shepardson; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn) Volkswagen Agrees to $15.3 Billion Settlement in Diesel Pollution Case Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business –shares Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. How Mainstream Is Marijuana Cannabis Franchises Are Available in Colorado

Their plan is to eventually to take the brand national through franchises in states with legal medical and recreational marijuana. The first challenge for interested entrepreneurs is obtaining a state license to open a dispensary. ONE Cannabis provides consulting services to help potential franchise owners navigate the application process.ONE Cannabis is also approaching operating dispensaries likely to benefit from becoming a franchise. “Many independent dispensaries are generating revenues far below the industry average,” Hageseth said.Part of the attraction for independent operators is the working relationships ONE Cannabis has nurtured along the cannabis supply chain for nearly a decade. What You Need to KnowAn Anticipated MoveIndustry watchers have expected a strong move by someone into franchising dispensaries. The patchwork quilt of independent dealers has opened the door to ambitious entrepreneurs. It was only a matter of time before someone stepped forward to provide a degree of consistency and uniformity to marijuana dispensaries. With no end in sight to federal prohibition franchising nationwide faces ongoing challenges but is a trend within states where cannabis is legal, according to cannabis-business attorneys. Washington now allows individuals to own up to five retail marijuana dispensaries, creating a situation that invites consolidation. California, which launched a legal recreational marijuana program this year, anticipates a large number of franchises. With the “mainstreaming” of marijuana well underway, you can expect marijuana dispensaries to eventually go the way of McDonald’s and Jiffy Lube, a prediction that would have been fantasy just a decade ago.Related: How This Former Marine Turned His PTSD Into a Multi-Million-Dollar Business in 60 DaysTo stay up to date on the latest marijuana related news make sure to like dispensaries.com on Facebook 3 min read Cannabis –shares Subscribe Now Add to Queue dispensaries.com Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. El Chapo and the 15 Biggest MoneyMaking Criminals of All Time

first_imgNews and Trends (Escobar’s stash took an estimated hit of $1.2 billion thanks to hungry rats in his many money hideouts.)Measuring in at a not-so-whopping 5′ 6″, Pablo was almost as pequeño as El Chapo, but there was nothing itsy-bitsy about Escobar’s empire. At his zenith? The Columbian kingpin was responsible for nearly 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. At his nadir? He was shot dead on a Los Olivos roof, while trying to escape the Colombian National Police, in 1993.Hollywood Bona Fides: Yet another Netflix alert! The bars contain 40% cocoa and are targeted at consumers who find milk chocolate a little too sweet and dark chocolate too bitter. The line has been available in original and roasted almond flavours in the UK.Kate Wall, Mondelēz marketing manager for Cadbury, said: “In testing, Cadbury Darkmilk achieved our best ever results for both taste and concept, and these were indicative of the full market as the tablets’ launch has achieved our aim in driving incremental sales to the category.“The singles addition, in both standard and PMP (price-marked packs) formats, will help independent retailers drive impulse sales. Research shows that the perception of improved value, speed of sales, convenience and heightened customer trust make stocking PMPs a great option, with a fifth of shoppers going so far as to say they would choose a particular convenience store if they knew it stocked PMPs. To make the most of the opportunity, retailers should make sure they’re stocked up at launch and ahead of our first TV campaign in May.”The Darkmilk brand will be supported by a £6 million investment with ongoing in-store activation, sampling, PR and digital activity, and it will hit screens for the first time in May 2019.Both the new 35g bar and salted caramel flavour will be available in the UK as of January.Share with your network: Tags: CadburychocolateMondelez InternationalUKlast_img read more

Last month, the Pennyslvania supreme court struck down the congressional map drawn following the 2010 census by Republicans who controlled the legislature and governor’s office. In a startling example of political gerrymandering, redistricting designed to favour one party, the Republicans broke decades of geographical precedent to produce contorted district shapes including one that critics said resembled “Goofy kicking Donald Duck”.There are 18 Pennsylvania districts, which Republicans control 13-5 despite registered Democrats outnumbering Republicans five to four in the state. The Democratic-controlled state supreme court said the current boundaries “clearly, plainly and palpably” violated the Pennsylvania constitution, and blocked the map from remaining in effect for the 2018 elections. The deadline to file paperwork to run in primaries is 6 March. The court gave the Republican-controlled state legislature until 9 February to pass a replacement and the Democratic governor, Tom Wolf, until 15 February to submit that replacement to the court. After that deadline, state justices might draw up their own map. The supreme court typically does not review state court decisions based on a state’s constitution. But Pennsylvania Republicans asked the high court to make an exception. Alito handles emergency appeals from Pennsylvania. The supreme court is currently weighing whether redistricting can be so partisan that it violates the US constitution, in cases from Maryland and Wisconsin. Photograph: News Ltd/AFP/Getty Images Share Facebook Share on Twitter Facebook heartfulembrace Facebook Share on Facebook Report The Ofili and Serrano really are trashy and derivative works, cashing in on the cheap shock value of juxtaposing bodily fluids or excretions against traditionally revered concepts or images. There is nothing about the crude line-work or crude photographic technique which had not already been thoroughly explored over half a century earlier. There is little or nothing about their use of bodily excretions which had not been explored already in innumerable fetishist photos or films in the 1960s (to say nothing of the level or artistry already accomplished in that area by John Waters – which was at least refreshing and direct, relative to the staleness of Ofili’s and Serrano’s work). I’m not saying Trump (such an easy mark, why even bother?) has good artistic sense – he has no artistic sense whatsoever, any more than he has political sense. But the Ofili and Serrano are too tiresome to bring up again and show us images of – let them remain buried in obscurity as one-off works whose only claim to fame is the ire of right-wing Philistines who thought their pieces might actually have something to say to many – which clearly, they do not. Twitter Reply Facebook Facebook Share Share Report 5 6 Share on Facebook Cal Stowe When the White House requested a Van Gogh painting from the Guggenheim for the president’s living quarters, the museum rebuffed them and offered a solid 18-carat-gold toilet by the artist Maurizio Cattelan instead. And Trump, in his 2018 and 2019 budget plans, proposed eliminating funding the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), making him the first president to publicly suggest doing so since the agencies were established in 1965. Ultimately, Congress would pass a spending bill that saw a modest $3m funding increase for both endowments. Report 31 Jul 2018 1:08 Facebook Facebook | Pick Pinterest Report Share Facebook The image is often invoked as a political cudgel in the culture wars, understood by hardline conservatives as proof of a need for the separation of art and state. In a 2017 polemic against taxpayer-funded art, it took the Pulitzer-winning conservative journalist George Will all of two sentences to refer to Piss Christ as “rubbish”. And 20 years earlier, conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation inveighed against the NEA “welfare for cultural elitists” tainted by “a radical virus of multiculturalism”, a charge that reads today as a dog-whistle to the Americans who helped elect Trump. That the agency funds art therapy for military personnel – as well as projects in every congressional district in the country – many of which are community based and would cease to function without NEA funding – is artfully omitted from arguments against its existence.“There is a perception among those who are perhaps somewhat right-leaning that the art world is such a monetized sphere that it could fund itself privately rather than being, in any sense, state-supported,” says Bedford, now director of the Baltimore Museum of Art. But art, he says, “is as vital and indispensable as mental health care, health care, or education. As such, there should be a government investment in providing not only advocacy for the arts but access for all.” Facebook 31 Jul 2018 0:50 Share on Twitter Show 13 more replies | Pick Facebook Close report comment form Trump requests a Van Gogh, and they offer a solid gold toilet. On Wagner’s Ring Cycle he said: “Never again.” On Chris Ofili’s The Holy Virgin Mary, which then mayor Rudy Giuliani tried to ban: “Absolutely gross, degenerate stuff.” Even the legitimacy of Trump’s Renoir was debunked when the Art Institute of Chicago said the original hangs in its gallery. The notion that the US delegate for what is known as the “Olympics of art” would be contingent on their allegiance to the president is, to many, in diametric opposition to the spirit of the biennale, which serves as a kind of visual expression of a country’s values, a platform for its “best and brightest,” as Christopher Bedford says. Bedford, who curated Bradford’s exhibit at the 2017 biennale, thought of “liberty, equity and justice for all” as he championed Bradford’s submission. Trump, on the other hand, has made no secret of his aversion to government-funded arts, “liberal Hollywood” and, by extension, the mostly anti-Trump arts community. That community, as it is wont to do in moments of political unrest, has responded in kind. There was Barbara Kruger’s 2016 cover of New York magazine, in which the word “loser” – a favourite epithet of the president – graces a particularly unflattering close-up photo of him. Other highlights include Judith Bernstein’s Money Shot – Blue Balls, in which Trump appears beside phallic imagery and the word “Trumpenschlong,” and Awol Erizku’s series Make America Great Again, in which the emblem of revolutionary black power group the Black Panthers is printed on top of icons including the US flag. By August of Trump’s first year in office, all 16 artists, authors and architects on the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities resigned in opposition to Trump’s equivocations after the neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville. A White House spokeswoman responded that the president planned to disband the committee anyway. 7 8 47 48 Facebook Facebook No he didn’t. 31 Jul 2018 1:08 31 Jul 2018 0:49 Share newest | Pick Twitter Share on Twitter Reply Twitter MlleDeMaupin Pinterest Loading comments… Trouble loading? Twitter While the Trump presidency may mark an escalation in tensions between the art world and the federal government, it is hardly the first such bust-up. Even though the NEA and NEH make up about one tenth of 1% of the annual federal budget, efforts to siphon those funds away from the arts have ebbed and flowed since the 1980s. Ronald Reagan, on taking office in 1981, planned to kill the former endowment altogether but was inhibited when a special task force lobbied him on the agency’s behalf. A decade later, in response to a scathing Time magazine article by art critic Robert Hughes, in which he called rightwing attempts to decimate the NEA “cultural defoliation”, former speaker of the house Newt Gingrich slammed the NEA, NEH and Corporation for Public Broadcasting as pet programmes, not sacred cows. Some government subsidised artworks, Gingrich wrote, “are clearly designed to undermine our civilization”, a reference to Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ, a 1987 photograph, funded with NEA money, depicting a 13-inch plastic crucifix dunked in urine. Typically, countries announce their representatives at least a year in advance so the artists have time to make new work for what is widely considered the world’s pre-eminent international art exhibition. There is something particularly germane about this year’s theme, too: titled May You Live in Interesting Times, the exhibition will include “artworks that reflect upon precarious aspects of existence today, including different threats to key traditions, institutions and relationships of the postwar order”, curator Ralph Rugoff explained.Past US selections, including Mark Bradford, Joan Jonas and Sarah Sze, were announced at least a full year before the biennale. Now, with that deadline passed, state department staffers and art cognoscenti suspect an explicitly pro-Trump artist – like McNaughton, or maybe Scott LoBaido, the self-titled “patriot artist” from Staten Island best known for his 16ft starred-and-striped T statue – will make the grade. Some, including Artsy reporter Nate Freeman, wonder if anyone will be selected at all, in keeping with a president whose shown a philistine disregard for the arts and international engagement. … we have a small favour to ask. Perhaps more likely, though, is continued disengagement. Eighteen months in, the administration has yet to award any national medals of arts or humanities, a White House tradition that dates back to the 1980s. It has, however, awarded medals for military service and law enforcement, a pattern that suggests Trump adheres to presidential orthodoxy only if it shores up his base.By Trump’s own design, and Hannity’s account, art is just another wedge between that base and the left, a sensibility that can be used to convince groups of Americans they’re irrevocably different from one another. Hannity’s tweet was eventually turned into a popular meme that, using images of Jeff Goldblum as a centaur or a pregnant SpongeBob, mocked the idea of art as a partisan activity. But in a country as immersed in cultural strife as it was during the height of Reagan-era culture wars, it may well become one. And an event as distinguished as the Venice Biennale may not be spared. The piece is titled Respect the Flag, invoking protests against racial injustice that several NFL players have staged during the national anthem.Hannity’s willingness to cede “art” to the “left” was a natural extension of the culture wars waged by the president, which have turned the most American social phenomena – football, TV sitcoms, ESPN and even department stores – into partisan battlegrounds. Lost, however, in the whirlpool of clamour and chaos that is the Trump administration, is the president and his party’s indifference toward the arts – both as a publicly funded entity and a platform for American values. Donald Trump Support The Guardian Shares392392 An attendee wears a top reading ‘I really don’t care, do U’, echoing a jacket worn by Melania Trump en route to the US-Mexico border. Photograph: Leah Millis/Reuters Since you’re here… “The tax reform,” DeFranco said when asked what she was most impressed with. “I’m going to end up with like $300 extra this year because of what he’s done. No other president has given me a dime. Thank you, President. Thank you. Finally something for the working people.”If DeFranco’s rapturous assessment of Trump’s first 18 months might be expected, given she was prepared to wait six hours to see the president, she pointed to specific areas where she felt Trump had been a success. They fitted into a theme among others the Guardian talked to: Trump is keeping his promises on taxes, on immigration, and on putting America first. They also portray a mood among Trump’s base: one of celebration, sharply at odds with the anger and despair often seen gripping Democrats. That’s reflected in polls, too. In July an NBC/Wall Street Journal survey showed Trump’s approval rating among Republicans at a stunning 88%, the highest of his presidency. DeFranco, 53, works in a warehouse in nearby Nazareth, and she was swift to tie Trump’s “tough” approach to illegal immigration as necessary for her wages to increase further.“The blue collar industry I’m working in, the illegals are depressing the wages,” DeFranco said.“They pay horrible. And they’re getting away with it because of the illegals. Who not only get paid at the warehouse, but they’re also getting taxpayer benefits where it be food stamps, healthcare – they go into the hospital, they don’t have insurance.“So who absorbs that cost? The people working.”It was a common theme among Trump supporters at the rally, and it’s an idea Trump exploited during the campaign. People seemed willing to overlook the fact that the wealthiest in the country have continued to make more money while wages for the working and middle classes have largely stagnated, and they blame immigrants for their own, undoubtedly real, financial struggles. Share on Facebook Share on LinkedIn Supporters cheer on Donald Trump at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.Photograph: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Trump has also reveled in taking his show on the road – tearing through Europe and Asia with tours and tariffs as he claims to be muscling America back to the forefront. That grandstanding on the world stage has gone down particularly well with his supporters.“He’s putting America first. Whenever it comes to anything: with the tariffs, negotiating, he’s putting us Americans first above other countries, which is the way it always should have been,” said Phyllis Morgan, who was clad in a stars and stripes top and said she was in her sixties.“He’s putting pride back in America.”Morgan believed that if Trump had had more support from Congress he’d be getting even more done – which served as a common explanation among supporters for Trump’s failure on issues like healthcare, the construction of the wall, and his promises to revamp America’s ageing infrastructure. Pennsylvania Read more Facebook Play Video Topics ‘Enemy of the people’: Trump’s phrase and its echoes of totalitarianism “I like the fact he wants to build a wall,” said Bryan Trojan, 51. He was wearing a red Trump-Pence 2020 T-shirt that he had just bought from a vendor at the rally.“Immigrants are taking away from the people that live in our country. I mean they come in and then they get here and they get government assistance, they get this, and they’re taking it away from people who really may need it here.”Like DeFranco, Trojan – a team leader for sanitation at Leclerc foods, a Canadian company that makes cookies and snack bars – had already seen a benefit from Trump’s tax cut. “He gave larger corporations in our country a tax break which in turn gave me a raise,” Trojan said. Leclerc transferred its extra earnings from Trump’s tax bills to its employees, giving everyone a 6.5% raise, Trojan said. For him, that translated to a raise from $16-an-hour to $17.05-an-hour.Some people clearly have benefited from Trump handing more money to big corporations. But not very many people. An analysis by Bank of America Merrill Lynch in April found that fewer than 45 of the 500 companies in the Standard and Poor’s 500 index had paid out extra money to employees. Share on WhatsApp Pinterest Sat 4 Aug 2018 10.07 EDT Donald Trump’s campaign might still be under investigation over alleged collusion with Russia; his former campaign chairman might be up in court; but as far as his many overjoyed supporters are concerned, the president is doing a fantastic job.At a Trump rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, this week the overriding emotion was jubilation. As they see it, Trump is cutting their taxes. He’s keeping out the immigrants. He’s putting foreign leaders in their place, all while fulfilling that oft-quoted campaign promise: winning.“A-plus,” was the verdict of Suzie DeFranco. “A-plus-plus.”DeFranco had travelled from Bangor, about 60 miles south-east of Wilkes-Barre, to see Trump. She was draped in a Trump “Make America great again” flag and accompanied by her husband, daughter, and a friend. But DeFranco was not concerned. Instead, she echoed the “fake news” theme that had made up the bulk of Trump’s speech.“I don’t believe anything coming out of mainstream media anymore. I don’t believe anything they say,” DeFranco said.“And the problem here is if they ever do say something true, nobody’s going to believe them – because their track record is so bad.”The anti-media sentiment was easy to detect at the rally, from people shouting profanities at the media during Trump’s speech, to the wariness of the crowd to talk to reporters.Perhaps that idea – repeatedly reinforced by Trump – that the media is dishonest goes hand-in-hand with his supporters’ glowing assessment of his presidency so far. To paraphrase DeFranco: even if what the media say about Trump is true, nobody at this rally was going to believe them. Facebook Share via Email This article is more than 11 months old US politics When Trump took the stage, he was everything people like DeFranco and Trojan had come to see. Combative: he continued his attacks on the press – referring to the media as “fake, fake, disgusting news” and journalists present as “horrible, horrendous people”.It’s no secret that Trump revels in these campaign-style rallies. He has a captive audience and he knows how to work them. In Pennsylvania he spent more than an hour on stage, nominally campaigning for Lou Barletta, the Republican congressman running for Senate in Pennsylvania, but essentially just entertaining the crowd. It’s a far cry from a year ago, when Trump was often portrayed as a hostage in his own White House. John Kelly, the retired Marine Corps general, had taken over from Reince Preibus as chief of staff and had instilled strict discipline on the president. No longer could aides or hangers-on wander into the Oval Office for chats. Meetings had to be scheduled, the topics of the day’s meetings planned in advance. But Trump seems to have broken free recently, returning to his chaotic, pantomime-esque style of governing. 2:06 Adam Gabbatt in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Share on Twitter Reuse this content Last modified on Sat 4 Aug 2018 11.01 EDT Trump administration The crowds still love Donald Trump – but for how long? ‘Fake, fake, disgusting news’: Trump launches new broadside against media – video Share via Email Trump waves to fans after speaking at the rally. Photograph: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images But she was happy to focus on the successes.“Look at what he’s done with North Korea,” she said. “I think his negotiation skills are very good.”For David Weidow, a pony-tailed 54-year-old from nearby Scranton, reasserting dominance globally was Trump’s biggest success so far. He even borrowed Trump’s terminology to stress its importance. “He said ‘grab ’em by the pussy’. And I get exactly what he meant by that. Grab these countries where they’re weak. Take them down if they want to think we’re weak. Grab ’em by the pussy,” Weidow said. The Guardian pointed out that Trump was talking about women when he was recorded making those remarks, but Weidow was steadfast.“Well, they thought so. But I took it in other ways. Grab the whole world that’s against us by the pussy bring them all down if they don’t like us, fight us. Grab them by the pussy. Get them in their weak spot.” Others might have put it less viscerally than that, but alongside that double-whammy of tax reform and more hardline immigration policy, Trump’s pugnacious approach to the rest of the world was clearly appreciated.DeFranco, the warehouse worker who said she would be receiving an extra $300 from Trump’s tax cuts, also mentioned what she termed as the North Korea success.“He’s negotiating. He’s working towards peace. He stopped the missiles,” DeFranco said. Share on Facebooklast_img read more

Worlds First Crowd Promotion App Set to Shake up the Sharing Economy

first_imgWorld’s First Crowd Promotion App Set to Shake up the Sharing Economy – by Allowing Anyone to Monetise Their Social Media Profiles MTS Staff WriterJune 4, 2019, 6:02 pmJune 10, 2019 MNFST, the world’s first crowd promotion platform which connects brands with nano influencers has launched on Android and IOS following a successful investment round.Promising a new approach to Influencer Marketing, the MNFST platform allows all users of Twitter and Instagram to earn money through brand collaborations in just three simple steps, irrespective of their number of followers.MNFST, standing for Manifest, allows users to manifest their social channels into a lucrative business, calculating each individual’s ‘Social Capital Score’ via a proprietary algorithm that determines their influence and projected earnings for their participation in brand campaigns. Users of the app have complete discretion over the brands they partner with, acting as an authentic voice of influence towards their follower base.Marketing Technology News: Lionbridge Launches Lionbridge AI, Extends Leadership Position in AI Data Training ServicesThe app is able to connect brands with a previously untapped online community of the ‘everyday’ social media users – those who have a small but loyal following of family and friends – by operating on a Crowd Promotion basis. This unlocks the potential for unparalleled reach and maximum return on investment when a brand collaborator uses MNFST as a standalone Marketing channel, or if it adds MNFST into the Paid Social and Influencer Marketing mix. Those who run campaigns with MNFST have access to a community of over 800 designers who can create a suite of campaign assets in the form of 2D, 3D, video and AR  adverts. The app is also pioneering a new visual format of Segmentation, allowing the user to be transported into a different setting via their phone camera. As they take a picture of themselves, they are ‘cut out’ and placed into a new background. Other technologies embedded in the app include face tracking, to ensure all posts have a human visual in the shot and object recognition, which scans for inappropriate content. The founders were inspired by the rise of the sharing economy – just as anyone can rent out their home or room on Airbnb, now anyone can monetize their social media profile with MNFST.Currently available in the UK and Poland, the app operates an innovative auction-based pricing model that allows brands to set payment offers based on price per impression – such as 1p per impression – which is then translated into a unique, non-negotiable monetary offer to the user.Marketing Technology News: Internet Grows to 351.8 Million Domain Name Registrations in the First Quarter of 2019Misha Sokolov, the co-founder of MNFST, comments “Our mission is to help people grow their Digital Assets by empowering them to support the brands they genuinely like and benefit from it monetarily or morally via supporting brands and/or charities.”“This new breed of influencer doesn’t have a fanbase of millions or a blue tick, but offers brands an unrivaled sense of authenticity and transparency, and boasts a highly engaged, loyal ‘fanbase’. These influencers want to share content they love, with the people who they care about most – and now they can get rewarded to do exactly that” Misha continues. At a time when the Social Media Advertising market is estimated to reach $100 billion in 2019, MNFST aims to boost growth even further by effectively creating a new advertising surface.Companies have been quick to recognize the potential of MNFST, with current partners including Ideal Flatmate, The Prince’s Trust, and Shelter. Gett taxi service, the first company to run a campaign with the app, saw over 3000 people participate its ‘Gett Green’ campaign – raising awareness of its eco-friendly fleet of electric cabs – within five weeks, with posts on Instagram and Twitter generating over four million impressions and nearly 400 shares. It resulted in a cost per impression that was almost three times lower than the cost of Facebook advertising.Dave Waiser, Founder & CEO of Gett, Europe’s leading ride-sharing solution says: “MNFST has a truly innovative approach to Digital Marketing; one which Gett, as a fellow disruptor and tech innovator, highly appreciates. We were very impressed by how quickly the MNFST team was able to ramp up and scale, and in a way that was not only seamless to operate, but also very much on brand – and consumer-friendly. We are eager to see what the MNFST team does next – and look forward to playing a part in their successful path forward.”Marketing Technology News: Mobiquity’s AdCop Finds Ad Fraud Lurking Below the FloorMisha adds: “Prior to MNFST, less than 1% of the global Social Media community were able to use their profiles as valuable assets. MNFST breaks down that barrier and offers this opportunity to millions – whilst giving brands a chance to harness the power and massive potential of crowd referral.” Influencer marketingMarketing TechnologyMNFST platformNewsSocial Capital ScoreSocial Media Previous ArticleYext Transforms Search with Brand Verified AnswersNext ArticleCofense Report Reveals Weaknesses in Secure Email Gateways, Illustrates Critical Role of Human Intelligence in Phishing Defenselast_img read more

Microsoft Blocks Windows 10 May 2019 Update on Surface Book 2

It’s the latest self-own from a company that promised its new methods of rolling out updates and patches would result in more consumer trust and fewer issues four years ago. So far, those promises have not materialized.Microsoft’s methods of testing Windows 10 have been broken for years. After Satya Nadella took over as CEO, Microsoft made QA changes that left programmers in charge of fixing their own bugs and turned Windows 10 users into voluntary beta testers via the Windows Insider program. Unfortunately, members of the Windows Insider program rarely use the OS as a daily driver (and Microsoft does not recommend doing so). This has been the explanation for how certain flaws have shipped on an ongoing basis.Microsoft has repeatedly shipped updates with significant problems, though the number of people hit by said problems has varied. We’ve seen the company push major updates that deleted decades worth of customer files, caused blue screens when certain USB devices were plugged in, and broke various other critical system components, including third-party antivirus utilities, System Restore, Windows Media Player, and file associations. The Windows 10 May 2019 update is already blocked on PCs that use USB storage and SD cards. Microsoft has made much of the fact that its overall incidence rate has declined over time, but has not addressed user concerns about the severity of some of the bugs it has introduced. From Microsoft’s compatibility warning page.In this case, as PCMag reports via ZDNet, a bug in the Windows 10 2019 update causes the secondary Nvidia GPU on the Surface Book 2 to vanish. Since the main reason to buy a Surface Book 2 is for the unique design that allows for an Nvidia discrete GPU in a thin portable with a detachable option, this is a major flaw. It is not clear why this flaw solely affects the Surface Book 2 but not the Surface Book. It appears to have been discovered as Microsoft gears up to push the May 2019 update out to larger numbers of customers, due to the large number of people still using the April 1803 update, which officially leaves support in November of this year.As a side note: Microsoft has also identified an issue with 1903 that causes gamma ramps, color profiles, and night light settings to stop working. I’m fairly certain this explains the distinct purple tint that’s been popping up on testbeds in between driver swaps and occasionally in the middle of reboots. We didn’t mention this in the Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme 8GB review or the 5700 / 5700 XT review, but I’ve talked about it with several other publications and they’ve been seeing oddities around driver updates as well. If you do happen to run into this weird purple-tint issue, it can sometimes be solved by rebooting or by reinstalling a display driver. In one case, setting a specific color profile for the monitor I was using also worked. It causes the Windows 10 blue screen that pops up when you Ctrl-Alt-Delete to be a distinct shade of purple but does not harm performance (it does, however, wreck screen colors and is generally off-putting to look at).Now Read:Microsoft Includes Telemetry Update in Security Patches, Raising Fears About Company MotivesMicrosoft Kills Automatic Registry Backups in Windows 10Bill Gates: My Greatest Mistake Ever Was Letting Microsoft Lose to Android This is Where ‘Thor 4’ Will Take Place in the Marvel Timeline Saying Goodbye to Johnny Depp Ginny From ‘Harry Potter’ Is 28 and Unrecognizably Gorgeouslast_img read more

At a Glance Kingston KC2000 1TB SSD Review

first_img An Honest ‘Once Upon a Time In…Hollywood’ Review Huge Scandals That Rocked The History Channel Kingston’s new KC2000 series SSDs were designed to tackle the high-end consumer SSD market. With capacities available up to 2TB in size and read/write speeds as high as 3,200/2,200MB/s, this drive has the potential to play a major role in the SSD market. But so far, the drives are off to a rough start.DesignKingston’s KC2000 SSDs use 96-layer 3D TLC Kingston NAND that connects to an SMI 2262EN controller. This controller features Silicon Motion’s NANDXtend ECC technology, which helps to keep data secure by preventing read/write errors. The drive also supports 256-bit XTS-AES encryption. These features make the drive better suited for business use, where the loss or theft of data could have serious consequences. These drives have average endurance ratings that match up with what we’ve seen from other 3D TLC NAND products in the past. In short, for each 250GB of NAND, the drive is able to handle 150TBW before failing.BenchmarksOur sister site PCMag ran a 1TB model of Kingston’s KC2000 through its usual quartet of benchmarks alongside three competing products from Adata, Samsung, and Western Digital. In the first test using PCMark 8 Storage test, we see virtually no difference from one drive to the next.Stepping things up with Crystal DiskMark 6.0 we start to see some deviation between the competing drives. In the sequential read/write test, Kingston’s KC2000 places second while reading data and last while writing it. It’s worth noting that the KC2000 actually exceeds its maximum reported read/write performance. The same can’t be said for the other tested drives, all of which come in below their rated performance.Reading and writing random 4K chunks of data is a weakness of this drive. It doesn’t come in dead last in this test, but its performance results leave much to be desired.Turning last to AS-SSD’s file transfer test, we once again see the KC2000 in a rather mixed position. The KC2000 came finished in second place while transferring the program folder and the game folder, and its performance results were close to what was achieved by the Adata XPG SX8200. Conversely, the drive’s performance while transferring the ISO file was significantly lower than the other tested drives.ConclusionFinally, there’s pricing. The 1TB model PCMag tested has an MSRP of $201.50, and strangely, it’s currently available for a higher price of $218.06 from Amazon. Unfortunately for Kingston, SSD prices have been trending downward, so that’s somewhat high for a 1TB SSD at the moment. The 1TB model of Samsung’s 970 Evo is similarly priced but offers better performance in most scenarios. As users become more demanding about the information and service they expect online – and as retailers across Europe struggle to meet these expectations – Grow My Store scores retailers’ websites and generates bespoke reports with recommendations to help retailers improve the online experience they offer and grow their business. This could include clear pricing and intuitive navigation, personalising the experience for shoppers, providing live chat support or making sure the site is mobile-friendly. Grow My Store tests retailers against up to 22 metrics based on in-depth studies into customer experience best practices. The site will initially be available in English, French, German (DACH region) and Spanish with other European countries to follow in 2019.Google created the tool as consumers become more demanding about the information and service they expect from retailers online. Building on the success of the International Growth platform Market Finder, a free tool which helps businesses to go global by guiding them along the export journey step by step, it became clear that a similar tool would be helpful for retailers to grow their businesses. Grow My Store will also direct users to relevant Google products and services that can move their business to the next phase of growth.Marketing Technology News: Outdated Technology Preventing Banks from Investing in Disruptive Technologies, According to Fenergo SurveyFionnuala Meehan, VP EMEA, Google Customer Solutions, said: “For retailers of all sizes, their website is their digital flagship store, so Google wants to help retailers to make their online and omnichannel customer experience as appealing as possible to customers. That’s why we have built a tool that brings together all this valuable insight into one place and then uses that insight to create bespoke recommendations for retailers providing clear support and advice.”Retailer websites should be a number one priority for both online and multichannel retailers, with 90% of EMEA shoppers who visited a store in the last week saying they used online search prior to going in-store. Despite rising customer expectations many retailers across EMEA are failing to provide a best in class experience with 23% of retailers not publishing any contact information of their stores on their website.Retailer recommendations in the Grow My Store tool are market specific and based on country-level research. For example, almost two thirds (63%) of UK consumers say that clearly displayed prices are important for a good online shopping experience – and 77% of them want the search and filtering tools to feel intuitive and familiar.Marketing Technology News: RainFocus Recognized as Account-Based Marketing Thought LeaderIn Spain, 40% of customers list next day delivery as something that would most increase their likelihood of buying a product, while 81% say that free delivery is important for them to have a good online shopping experience. In France, most shopper research occurs on mobile, while purchases still tend to happen on desktop.More than half (58%) of German consumers say an easy returns policy would increase their likelihood of buying a product online.Marketing Technology News: The Measurement Advantage: Marketing Leaders Are Four Times As Likely As Laggards To Exceed Business Goals, Grow Revenue, And Gain Market Sharelast_img read more

Edge Cloud is designed to serve the needs of businesses bringing billions of endpoints online as part of the IoT connected device revolution and further boost the adoption and power of in-application messaging.Solves Critical Scale and Operational Challenges According to IoT Analytics Research, by 2025, approximately 22 billion connected devices will be sending data across the Internet. In addition, billions of application instances will be sending trillions of messages, and these endpoints represent both vast opportunities and challenges for businesses in terms of harnessing, distributing and protecting the data. From car makers to hotel operators, virtually every industry is incorporating endpoints in the form of connected devices and applications into their business strategies, capitalizing on the ubiquity of Internet access. However, building and managing the infrastructure required to support, scale and secure these experiences can be incredibly time-, cost- and resource-intensive for organizations and not a part of their core competency.“Akamai is investing to extend its network capabilities with the goal of meeting the unique needs of the growing IoT device and application messaging markets,” said Craig Adams, senior vice president and general manager, Web Performance and Security, Akamai Technologies. “Delivering massive amounts of data across the globe securely is in Akamai’s DNA. We are focused on developing technology designed to scale, simplify and secure the way IoT and application data is delivered to endpoints.”Marketing Technology News: Nami ML Emerges from Stealth to Unveil the Future of Mobile App SubscriptionsOffers Global Scale and Connectivity for Data Management The Edge Cloud solution line provides global scale that other data platforms for IoT and messaging lack. Most vendors designed their networks to serve the early adopters where scale, manageability and performance were not necessarily a concern. As more use cases emerge for IoT and in-application messaging, such as Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), the need to offer connectivity for billions of devices, real-time data delivery and capabilities that allow for easier data management are a requirement.IoT Edge Connect, a new product within the Edge Cloud solution line, tackles these challenges head on by offering a secure framework. Both resource-constrained IoT devices and applications using MQTT for messaging can send or publish information about a given topic to a server that functions as an MQTT message broker.IoT Edge Connect offers:Scalability: IoT Edge Connect is architected to scale to support hundreds of millions of endpoints and 10-times more messages than other IoT or in-app messaging cloud solutions. The service reduces device battery drain and optimizes data delivery speed and volume.Ease of use: Because the service is designed as one continuous global service (logical service) and is fully integrated with an all-in-one data stream, distributed database and a key value store, operations are simplified across the globe.Security: End-to-end mutual authentication is designed to ensure secure communication between connected endpoints and the Akamai Edge Cloud, while the fully-managed solution also supports data isolation requirements.Reliability: Businesses can easily and efficiently take advantage of MQTT. In fact, the service is the only International Standard Organization-compliant cloud broker of the major cloud providers with all three levels of Quality of Service (QoS).Marketing Technology News: Intertrust and Vewd Partner to Introduce Next Generation Content Protection for HbbTVWith IoT Edge Connect, developers can enable low-latency interactions with millions of endpoints and process data in real-time. Customers using the service can reduce network, compute and database build out, reduce security breaches and improve manageability, avoiding the need to develop and maintain proprietary and costly IoT and in-app messaging networks.“Akamai believes that we are offering the next generation of messaging with scalability, operational simplicity and security, providing a turn-key solution that allows customers to focus on their core business rather than integrating and managing discreet but necessary components for messaging,” said Lior Netzer, vice president and CTO, IoT, Akamai. “With the launch of IoT Edge Connect, we’re harnessing the power of the Edge and bringing it to the next frontier of connected devices and applications.”Marketing Technology News: Loyalty Brands Announces Partnership with Textellent To Deliver Innovative SMS Sales & Marketing Capabilities Akamai Introduces the Edge Cloud Solution, Designed to Scale, Secure and Simplify IoT Connected Device and In-Application Messaging PRNewswireJune 17, 2019, 2:31 pmJune 17, 2019 last_img read more

Report Native Email Security Systems Open Doors to Vulnerabilities

first_imgLatest ESRA Finds Tens of Thousands of Impersonation Attacks, Malware Attachments and Malicious URLs being Delivered to Users’ InboxesMimecast, a leading email and data security company, announced the availability of its latest quarterly Email Security Risk Assessment (ESRA), an aggregated report of tests that measure the efficacy of widely used email security systems. The report shows the need for the entire industry to continue to work toward a higher standard of email security. Many organizations think their current email security systems are up to the task of protecting them from phishing. Unfortunately, many of them fall short and do not keep their organizations safe. The latest quarterly ESRA report shows that many email attacks ranging from opportunistic spam to highly targeted impersonation attacks are getting through incumbent email security systems both in large number and variety. The report found 26,305,457 spam emails, 27,156 malware attachments, 55,190 impersonation attacks and 466,905 malicious URLS, were all missed by these incumbent providers and delivered to users’ inboxes, an overall false negative rate of 11% of inspected emails.Marketing Technology News: Medallia Becomes Premier-Level Partner in Adobe Exchange Partner ProgramImpersonation and phishing attacks are becoming a growing problem.  According to the recently launched State of Email Security 2019 report, 85% of the 1,025 global respondents experienced an impersonation attack in 2018, with 73% of those victims having experienced a direct business impact – like financial, data or customer loss. Not only that, but 94% of the respondents said they experienced a phishing attack, with 55% noting an increase in this type of attack year over year. This reaffirms the need for the industry to continue to provide better efficacy in their email protection to help organizations strengthen their cyber resilience to keep their data and communications safer.Marketing Technology News: Miaozhen Systems Acquires RadioBuy to Deepen its Omni-Marketing Intelligence Strategy“Today’s threat landscape continues to evolve as cybercriminals adapt their attack methods, particularly email-borne attacks, to evade the detection of traditional security solutions.
